Prof. Joana Azeredo

    Joana Azeredo is an associate professor with aggregation at Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho, a researcher at Centro de Engenharia Biológica, and coordinator of the research group on Bacteriophages and Biofilms. Her research activity focuses on the development of biotechnological solutions for the control of bacterial infections, having made significant contributions in the field of phage therapy (the use of viruses to combat infectious diseases) and collaborating with various international research centers. She was recently honored by the subcommittee on virus taxonomy of bacteria and archaea of the ICTV with the proposal to assign her surname to a subfamily of bacteriophages (Azeredovirinae). She is a founding member of the International Society of Viruses of Microbes, actively participating in the dissemination of the society’s scientific activities, particularly in organizing conferences and international courses. Throughout her scientific career, she has been responsible for 3 European projects and 7 national projects, co-founded the spin-off Inception, and supervised 17 doctoral theses. She is the editor of the Virology Journal and co-author of 4 patents, 3 books, and over 250 articles in international journals.
