Prof. Isabel Sá-Correia

    ISABEL SÁ-CORREIA is Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Emerita Professor at the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), and integrated Researcher at the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB). A Chemical Engineering graduate (1975, IST), Prof Sá-Correia evolved her field of training and activity to Biological Sciences. She holds a PhD degree in the field of Yeast Physiology (1984) and, as Fulbright Visiting Assistant Professor, she carried out post-doctoral studies (Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering of Bacteria) at the Univ. Illinois at Chicago, Medical Center, Chicago (1985/86). Prof Sá-Correia research activities are in the fields of Molecular; Cellular Microbiology and Functional; Comparative Genomics with impact in Microbial Biotechnology and Human Health. Current research projects focus on i) Physiological Genomics of Stress Response and Tolerance in Yeasts ii) Yeast Diversity and Advanced Integrated Yeast Biorefineries. Prof Sá-Correia coordinated at IST the PhD program in Biotechnology and Biosciences and the Master´s degrees in Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, and Microbiology. She was the advisor of more than 30 PhD theses and 60 MSc theses. She was President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (2009-2020) and is full member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
