Dr. Alberto Reis

    Alberto Reis is a Chemical Engineer (1986), Master’s degree holder (1991), and Ph.D. holder (2001) in Biochemical Engineering (IST). He conducted Postdoctoral studies (2002, 2003, 2005) at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) with scholarships funded by FCT and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He holds the title of “Agregado” in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Minho (2023). He is an Associate Coordinator at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit (UBB), also leading the Priority Area of R&D “Biorefineries for the Bioeconomy.” He is the Responsible Investigator/Coordinator of several national and international thematic projects and networks in Bioenergy and Biorefineries, with a focus on R&D of microalgal biorefineries, especially those developed from effluents, industrial and agricultural by-products, and greenhouse gases, mainly CO2. His area of ​​specialization is biomass refining/fractionation, mainly microalgae for the production of advanced biofuels and biological-based products. He is the author or co-author of 119 international peer-reviewed articles and several chapters in specialty books registered in the Web of Science, of which 103 are in the Web of Science Core Collection. He has an H-Index of 33, with his publications having a total of 3015 citations [Web of Science Metrics (Mar 4th, 2024)]. He has supervised or co-supervised 4 completed Doctorates and is currently supervising or co-supervising 6 Ph.D. students. He has supervised or co-supervised 26 post-Bologna Master’s degrees or equivalents. He is an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Environmental Science (Water and Wastewater Management) and Energies MDPI. Alberto Reis has had regular teaching activity as a professor in various international Master’s programs and Advanced Courses. He has been a regular evaluator of international and national research projects.
