Raquel Aires-Barros, PhD

    Raquel Aires- Barros is a Full Professor at the Department of Bioengineering at Intituto Superior Técnico, and a researcher at the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB). She graduated from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1984 in Chemical Engineering and was an invited researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1986-1987. She obtained a master’s degree in Biotechnology (Biochemical Engineering), a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, and aggregation (2001) from IST. She was Vice-President of the Scientific Council and member of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council of IST (2007-2009). Between 2012 and 2020 Raquel Aire-Barros was President of the Pedagogical Council of IST and since 2021 she has been Vice-President of the IST School Board. In 2022 she was appointed Teaching Provider at Técnico. At iBB, Raquel Aires-Barros leads a research group focused on the development of new processes for the production and purification of biopharmaceuticals and the development of these processes on a microscale. She is chair of the Downstream Processing (DSP) section of the European Society of Biochemical Engineering Sciences (ESBES); president of the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology; and editor of Separation and Purification Technology magazine. Raquel Aires-Barros supervised more than 70 master’s and doctoral dissertations and is the author of more than 250 articles and book chapters in the areas of Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
