António Grilo, PhD

    António is currently working at Foundation Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), an NGO that jointly with the World Health Organisation, co-leads the mRNA Technology Transfer Programme aimed at equipping low and middle income countries with mRNA vaccine manufacturing technology. Prior to joining MPP, he was part of the team responsible for technology transfer, manufacturing support, validation (PPQ) and continuous process verification of commercial mRNA vaccine manufacturing processes at Lonza. Between 2019 and 2021 he was a member of the MSAT (Manufacturing Science and Technology) team in charge of the start up and first technology transfers into a new state-of-the-art monoclonal antibody manufacturing facility at Lonza. During this time, he focused on innovative mAbs in clinical trial phases I and II and specifically on late- stage development, scale-up and manufacturing  using single-use technologies. António holds a Ph.D in chemical engineering from Imperial College London (2019) with a thesis on mathematical modelling of mammalian cell culture and an MSc. in bioprocess engineering by Instituto Superior Técnico (2013) with a thesis on purification of mAbs using aqueous two-phase systems, in collaboration with American biopharmaceutical company Amgen.
