Prof. João Canário

João Canário is an Associate Professor with Aggregation in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Laval and Trent and a visiting researcher at the Center for Northern Studies, all in Canada.
João Canário holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (Environmental Chemistry) from NOVA University Lisbon, and in 2017 he completed his Aggregation in Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico. He serves as the Vice-President of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and Chair of the Terrestrial Working Group.
João Canário has been conducting research on the biogeochemical cycles of elements in the environment, particularly mercury. Since 2008, he has participated in various research campaigns in the Arctic and Antarctica. In the Arctic, he studies the impact of climate change on permafrost degradation, the role of organic matter composition in greenhouse gas emissions, and the export of contaminants from permafrost to boreal ecosystems. In Antarctica, his work has focused on the impact of Scientific Stations on Austral ecosystems and mercury dynamics on Deception Island.
