Prof. Carlos São-José

    Auxiliary professor
    Filliation
Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa

    PhaBRIC Lab, iMed (https://imed.ulisboa.pt/labs/carlos-sao-jose/).

Carlos São-José completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in 2002 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCULisboa). He pursued his postdoctoral studies between 2002 and 2008 at Instituto de Ciência Aplicada e Tecnologia (ICAT, FCULisboa) and at the Laboratory of Molecular and Structural Virology, CNRS, France. From 2008 to 2010, he was a Principal Investigator at Instituto de Medicina Molecular of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, during which time he also served as the Business Unit Scientific Manager at the company Technophage, SA. Since 2010, he has been a professor in the areas of molecular microbiology and infectious diseases at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (FFULisboa).
He currently leads the PhaBRIC laboratory (Phage Biology Research and Infection Control) at iMed (https://imed.ulisboa.pt/labs/carlos-sao-jose/). This laboratory is dedicated to studying the biology of bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, and how they can be exploited in the development of alternative therapies against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. One of the main lines of research aims to understand the molecular details of how bacteriophages use proteins to destroy the cell wall of bacteria. C. São-José collaborated with the company Technophage in the development of bacteriophage-based antibacterial strategies, sharing authorship of some patents.
