AbracaDATA: Sequencing modern life

Just a couple of decades ago, biology and computer science were two totally opposite fields of research. The increasing need for faster, more accurate and personalised results and approaches led to the fusion of these two major areas of knowledge, creating the emerging field of bioinformatics and pushing the boundaries of clinical research far beyond the typical mice and cell testing. Combining computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to the so-called big data sciences, scientists have been trailing new paths towards new therapeutics and cutting edge technology, with the ultimate goal of improving people’s quality of life. In this lecture you’ll discover, for instance, how scientists are contributing to the world’s fight against cancer by increasing the input of biometric data or by analysing the transcriptomic data and gene sequencing! Are you sure you don’t want to be part of the century’s biggest revolution?

Recording your own ECG!

In this workshop, you will learn more about one of the most famous medical exams, the electrocardiogram (ECG). What’s its origin? How is it measured? What diagnostic indicators does it count on? This workshop consists on three different phases. First, there will be a theoretical introduction so that you know exactly what you are dealing with. Then, it is time for you to get into action: you will capture the ECG of a volunteer with the help of a very useful tool to engineers, Bitalino, so that, finally, you are able to analyse the signal and obtain features of interest, using Matlab.

Patents and Innovation Strategy by JPC

Innovation has been playing an increasingly important role in society, thus originating in consumers and enterprises an increasing interest in the several links in the chain of production and commercialization. Also in Portugal, Innovation has been assuring institutions a differentiating feature. Its importance is understood as an investment, being one of the main orientation guidelines in companies which are more innovative, creative and exporting. The protection of Innovation guarantees a reduction of the risk associated with an investment in Innovation, as it introduces new ways of capitalising innovation and assuring a larger control of its commercialisation. In particular, the patent is the only mechanism that allows protection of an innovative concept, being applicable to technology and its implementation. This workshop will approach the procedures for obtaining a patent, the rights assured by a patent and the ways of capitalising innovation through a patent.

Artificial Intelligence : a step further in the future of health care

Artificial Intelligence is a tool extensively used across all fields of life nowadays. Particularly in Biomedical Engineering, advanced processing systems and technologies are used for a wide range of purposes. One can name the diagnostic and treatment of diseases, supported by the interpretation of medical images through deep learning algorithms, which appropriately perform an automatic selection of features. As far as the health system is concerned, the aggregation of patient health data derived from multiple resources, and the analysis of that data, results in informed health decisions that achieve improved clinical and financial outcomes. In this panel, we present four speakers whose work is tightly related to Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, be it in research for neurological diseases, applied to Bioinformatics, or as a tool in Public Administration.

Questions like “How does it function exactly?” or “Can it be easily defined?” may arise once you start considering this subject. In this lecture, a neuroscientist, a neurologist, a physicist and a psychologist will discuss questions like these and, more precisely, what decision-making is . Such a diversified group of professionals will not only challenge our assumptions about who we really are, but also provide different eye-opening perspectives on the subject.

About Us

The Semana da Bioengenharia (Bioengineering Week) at Instituto Superior Técnico (SBE IST) was first developed in 2014 as an initiative of the Bioengineering Department students of the Masters in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Microbiology.

Ever since, our mission has been to enhance the relationship between the academic community and both corporate and scientific world, as well as to disseminate the work carried out in Portugal and the rest of the world in the most diverse fields of bioengineering.

In order to fulfill this goal, we gather, during this week, an interdisciplinary group of students, academics, companies and start-ups, always encouraging the interaction and knowledge sharing between these entities.

Hence, SBE IST is a week full of lectures from investigators and companies in the bioengineering area, scientific field trips to relevant investigation or industrial facilities, workshops and international guests, among others.
