Dr. Rita Sobral

    Rita Sobral is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Life Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, since 2015. She received her M.Sc. degree in Applied Chemistry-Biotechnology in 1998 and her Ph.D. Degree in Biological Sciences in 2006. She conducted her doctoral Thesis research and post-doctoral studies at ITQB (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica) with Hermínia de Lencastre and Ana Madalena Ludovice and at Rockefeller University with Alexander Tomasz. She returned to FCT-NOVA in 2010 as a Ciência Program Research Fellow as group leader. In 2011, and again in 2015, her work was awarded the Young investigator research grant by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious diseases. Her research has been focused on the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus and on the complex interactions between the cell wall of this pathogen and the host. She is now the head of the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology of Bacterial Pathogens, currently with 1 senior researcher, 1 Post-doc, 4 Ph.D. students and 3 Master students.
