Dr. Joana Correia
Joana Correia is graduated in Chemistry by the University of Coimbra and has a PhD in Human Biology by the University of Porto and the Flanders Institute of Biotechnology. She conducted post-doctoral work in the Center for Genomic Regulation (Barcelona, Spain), the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto, the Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences (IBILI, Coimbra), and the Center for Neurociences and Cell Biology (Coimbra). She published several high impact papers such as in Human Molecular Genetics, PNAS and Gut. She was an Assistant Investigator in the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra since 2014.
Joana participated in the Technology Transfer program COHiTEC in 2014, where she started to develop the Business Plan of Exogenus Therapeutics. In June 2015, together with two partners, she founded Exogenus Therapeutics and assumed the roles of Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer at the company. Since then, she has been distinguished in 2015 with the 17th Edition of the Young Entrepreneur Award, by the Portuguese Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) and as a Young Transatlantic Innovation Leader 2017, an international program organized by the US government through the German Marshall Fund of US. She has won the Best Pitch presentation at the Startup Slam competition in Bio Europe Autumn 2017, the 2nd place at the Venture Lounge 2017 competition in Darmstadt (Life Sciences and Medtech, organized by H2020 SME Instrument Business Acceleration Services), and was a finalist at the EWMA- European Wound Management Association Alira Health Wound Care Innovation Award 2017. Under her leadership, Exo-T was also distinguished with the SME Instrument Phase I from the European Commission, and won the international Everis Foundation Award in 2016.
