Newton Gomes received his PhD in Microbiology from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since then, he has been working in the field of molecular and applied microbiology. He is currently a Principal Researcher at Center for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), in University of Aveiro, and Coordinator of the Laboratory for Molecular Studies of Marine Environments (LEMAM). The main area of scientific activity of Newton Gomes comprises investigation on microbial ecology and biotechnology, namely in the use of a metagenomics approach to study the structure and function of microbial communities. Newton Gomes has two international patents, more than a hundred published articles and two thousand citations.
