Maarten J. Arentsen is a professor (associate) of energy innovation at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Since the early 1990s he has done several researches on socio-technical changes and innovations in gas and electricity markets, in particular market liberalisation and implications, the institutional restructuring of the energy industry and the emergence and development of renewableenergy. Currently, he also focuses on the emergence and development of the biobased economy. Together with European colleagues he is developing a new European master program on bioresource value chain management. He has published numerous articles, papers and book chapters and co-edited several books on energy innovation. He teaches (under) graduate students in social and engineering sciences on energy innovation and biobased economy. He is member of two international academic networks on energy innovation and member of the editorial board of four energy journals. Between 1995 and 2004 he participated as the vice-director, in the management of CSTM, the sustainable development research institute of the University of Twente.
