Ana Varela Coelho has a Degree in Biochemistry from Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, and a PhD in Chemistry-Biochemistry from University of Évora. She is an Assistant Researcher at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA). One of the current research interests of her group are focused on the mechanisms of echinoderm regeneration that lead to the functional re-growth of complete body-parts, including the radial nerve cord, through the use of proteomic, proteogenomics and metagenomics approaches. In the field of marine biotechnology, the proteomics methodologies are additionally being used for the characterization of selected biological processes of marine organisms, which are related to detoxification mechanisms and synthesis of polysaccharides and toxins. She holds more than a hundred articles published in international scientific journals, and five book chapters.
