WORKSHOP – SCIENTIFIC WRITING vs SCIENCE WRITING: FROM DATA TO NARRATIVE

What are the differences between a paper published in a scientific journal and a science story published in a newspaper? Why is it essential to know how to communicate science, not only to the general public but also to your own colleagues?

Outline of the workshop

After briefly providing some answers to the questions above, we will consider the central issue: how to transform a piece of scientific writing into a piece of science writing. Here’s a clue: there’s nothing human beings love more than a good story. Through a concrete example, we will provide practical insight into how a narrative can be constructed that transforms the research results in question into stories which are rigorous from the scientific point of view, but have the added ability to arouse the reader’s interest. In the final section of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to write (or to start writing) a short news story based on the example supplied.

Required material: paper, pen and, if possible, a laptop computer.

Limit: 30 participants.
